I was killing some time at the thrift store this week why I was waiting to pick the kids up from school. Could not believe my eyes when I spied these high back wicker chairs. Oh they are to die for (well at least I think so anyway) and they were as cheap as chips.
I put my white denim chairs covers on them and don’t they look perfect. The chairs did come with their own nice vintage chair pads but think I will leave these ones on them for now.
To paint or not to paint – think they look perfect and aged just as they are. Would you all agree?

Fantastic find..and my vote is..not to paint..Im not a big fan of painted cane..I think its looks far worse when it starts to wear..as is…I think looks perfect..I think some backing cushions would also look great…as they look like kind of chairs you could just sit in for ages. X

Oh Ange, they are divine!!! Love your denim seat covers on them and I vote NOT to paint! But if you do get the painting bug, maybe a grey with a whitewash over the top instad of plain white I think would look lovely. Great find!!!!! ~ Tina xx

Hi Sandy, I just found your blog and I love it. I love seeing your transformations and your op shop finds. The cane chairs are nice as they are but I would be tempted to give them a white wash. I was speaking to a lady who owns a cane furniture store the other day and she explained that the cane gets that lovely faded grey colour when it has been soaked in muddy water. One of those things that my husband and I wondered how it was discovered! Did someone accidently leave their cane chair in the mud???? Anyway.. I noticed that you bought a new lounge from Ikea and Tina had recommended that one as well. How do you find it so far? Is it comfortable and well made? I would love to hear what you think? we live about three hours away from Ikea so we want to make sure.

Great chairs and that's always the question – natural, whitewash, or paint. I never know, so I live with them as found while I decide. After a while, I go for the whitewash, live with that for a while, then I paint.
I Love them –

Oh my! I used to have one of those in the mid 80's! How do you suppose it ended up all the way in Australia? I wish I still had mine, it was natural like yours are. Knowing me I would probably paint it at this point. Maybe a pretty pale yellow, light french blue, or a cottage white…but that's just me! Marcia

Sandy… I am Dore an Interior Designer Model Home Estates in Southern California…
Love the natural Bamboo/Cane and wickers do well in there natural state. They should never be finished and left raw or stain grade. The Blogger McCarthy Designs was right on soaking the cain in water…I can tell you why, it is a natural living reed and should stay in that state, it does well to spray it down for a good cleaning and a big drink of water this will keep in moist and not dry out and get brittle and snap and break or get holes in the cain.
I would soak my cain once every other month in the summer time and winter less. I would also always dust it with a damp rag, you can not preserve the life of the cain if it is painted this is why it wears out and get tattered and breaks. Although we al love or most of us love a great vintage cain and wood French style painted bed or chiar, yet the life and care is a touch and go process in the care and life of it.
To answer to why soak in in mudd water this is because the cain and reeds drink it up and the natural gary water will naturally stain and age it with the best pantina.
Sooo! I say strip off any old lacquers and soak it down, you can also fill up a spray bottle with a strong tea water and spay it monthly with a mist it will take on the color and it will love you for hydrating it.
PS. I just love your site…It shows your passion for all things with history and love of white.
I am passionate over the Natural Grays of the driftwood tones, old burlaps and whites.
G'day Love

Hi
I would recommend that you white wash the wicker chairs.
I just found an old fabulous wicker stool that I experimented with. I mixed 1/2 part water and 1/2 part high gloss white enamel paint
Soak a rag in the mixture and just rub into the wicker. It looks fabuloso!
