Every now and then I get stuck in my painting life. I picked these up yesterday for a song they are old and very solid. Lots of beautiful timber under there I am sure. I am so tempted to actually take them back to their original timber and stain them to its glory. Lots of work but would be worth it right? I also know these will look amazing white or french grey as photo above. What do you all reckon? opinions apreciated!!!

I always think it is worth it if the wood underneath is silky oak or has a beautiful grain…I guess you will find out when you give it a light sand.

I reckon you'd strip them back, get them looking gorgeous and then have an overwhelming urge to paint them, lol. They sure are great drawers. I'd go french grey myself but they're your drawers so you have the fun of deciding:o)

Not everything is improved with a lick of paint are they.
If the timber is worth it, strip them back, otherwise …you know what to do……

Can you just try a spot down at the bottom to see what you'd be getting into. I guess it just depends if you're up for the challenge… it's time and effort. At least you know you can always paint it and it will look great. I know that we all love the muted look but maybe there's a green lover that would love it kind of sanded in spots with the green showing through?? Just a thought.
From a USA follower…. I always love sitting here on one calendar day while viewing a post from the next calendar day! Thanks for the fun.

Hmm? I'd say paint it a french gray. I think it would look stunning in that color. I can't wait to see what you decide.

That gray color is awesome!! Thats my vote!

I'm not a grey girl, but I really like the look of those in the first picture. It would be lovely to see the colour of the wood though too. Sorry, not very helpful!

Well if they were my drawers I couldn't be bothered stripping them back. I would just paint them white or grey.. equally nice, and change the handles. But I also agree with anonymous.. I can really see those drawers left green but heavily sanded back to give a very rustic touch… but in the end ofcourse it's up to you! Have fun and look forward to seeing what you decide in the end.. take care, Maryann

What a nice set of drawers. That style of drawer means they are probably pine, maybe kauri, and would look beautiful stripped right back and then polished with some beeswax. I wouldn't bother staining them!

I love the idea of French Grey. Maybe a partial strip to see if it really is a beautiful timber and do what Julienne said – use beeswax and not stain

I have another thought…. my computer is not a good one so I may be seeing it wrong but it looks like there is a wider, separate looking panel or piece of wood that the knobs are on. What about doing those panels a different color than the rest to pull the detail out?? Just another thought!

Strip them down and see what is underneath. I just stripped an old, ugly server with intentions of restaining or painting and discovered gorgeous tiger oak was lurking underneath. A few coats of oil and the piece just shines. The paint might come off easier than you think.
